One of the most imported thing to do before selling or giving away a used smartphone is to wipe all personnel data from it. A built-in function called "Factory Reset" available in Android mobile operating system (OS), is considered to be the most secure way for wiping all data from the smartphone devices. Unfortunately, it is not true for the devices running OS version below 4.3. Recently, researchers from Cambridge University discovered that performing a data wipe using factory reset feature on Android devices running OS version below 4.3 doesn’t clear the device as they were able to access data (text msgs, images, videos, chat history , applications etc) which was previously wiped using “Factory Reset”.
This is because of a weakness in the Android Factory Reset option that could be exploited to record your login details, text messages, emails and pictures even if you have wiped its memory clean.
Following are the critical reset failures:-
- The lack of Android security for the secure deletion in smartphones running versions 2.3.x.
- The incomplete upgrades provided for flawed devices by smartphone providers.
- The lack of device security for secure deletion in certain OS (e.g versions 4.1, 4.2 and 4.3) by vendors.
- The lack of Android security for the secure deletion of the internal memory and external SD card in all OS version.
Android Factory Reset Flaw
That's because the file that stores the decryption key isn't erased during the factory-reset process. With the access to that file, an attack can use all possible combination for cracking the user’s PIN offline. It is an estimate world over that 500 Million smartphones are unable to erase their sensitive data securely.
Preventive Measures. Following steps may be taken to mitigate the threat:-
Use long and complex passwords to encrypt your smartphone data.
Update your phone to a new version of Android OS (above 4.3 )
Smart phone with class info shall be destroyed rather than selling or recycling.
Use external SD cards to store info and remove them before selling the phone or sending it for repair.
